Driving the Thruway on New Year’s Eve?
THRUWAY AUTHORITY OFFERS FREE COFFEE AT
THRUWAY TRAVEL PLAZAS FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE
Continuing a 43-year tradition, free coffee and hot tea will be available to travelers along the New York State Thruway on New Year’s Eve.
The free beverages will be available at each of the 27 Thruway travel plazas, along the 570-mile superhighway system, from 11 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2013, through 7 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
“This New Year’s Eve tradition, in partnership with Thruway travel plaza operators, is intended to remind motorists to take breaks to prevent drowsy driving on the Thruway and other roadways. Fatigue is a leading contributor to roadway accidents and making rest stops for a free hot beverage improves safety and puts drivers first,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison.
“Safety is our top priority on holidays and every day. I urge motorists to use caution and good judgment as we enter the New Year – please don’t drink and drive or text and drive,” Madison added.
Operators participating in the free-coffee program are McDonald’s Corporation, Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, and HMS Host Corporation.
Motorists are reminded not to stop along the shoulder of the roadway except in the case of an emergency.
