At the Joe Palumbo Soccer Academy in Putnam Valley on Saturday, a soccer field was dedicated in memory of Dustin Strumke.
Strumke died in 2002 following a snow-tubing accident. He was 13. Residents from Somers, Yorktown, Cortlandt Manor, Mahopac and Putnam Valley attended the dedication. Strumke was part of the Putnam Valley Pumas Soccer Team that was formed and coached by Joe Palumbo and Tina Strumke. To those who knew him, Strumke embodied skill, sportsmanship and personal discipline.
“Dustin’s enthusiasm and desire to be the very best in soccer and in life will always be remembered,” stated Joe Palumbo. “His zest for life, love for the game and competitiveness was contagious throughout the team and all the programs at JPSA, especially in the camp afternoon games!”
Palumbo went on to say he was touched by the number of children who came out in support of Strumke and had fun in his honor.
“Dustin loved soccer, the program and the Palumbos,” stated Tina Strumke. “This honor is truly a gift to our family for his memory to live on in the hearts of others for what he was truly passionate about.”
